shining a light on: boston's carter school + back bay's club cafe

  • For the past 8 years, students and teachers from the Carter School in Boston have marked their calendars for an event that “rocks”...their annual spring field trip to the Back Bay’s Club Café!
  • Kim Kulasekaran, who teaches at Carter, came up with the idea after noticing how music could literally “move” her students’ wheelchairs when they heard their favorite songs.
  • A public school for students with severe mental and physical disabilities, Carter’s music therapist Charlay Yates, understands the importance of activities like this: “Music and beats and rhythm are grounding and help students to be more aware of their surroundings,” Yates explains. (Boston Globe)
  • The Back Bay's Club Café makes this a this a truly special event, including greetings from co-owner Jim Morgrage (+ his two golden retrievers!) -- including donated space, food, beverages and glow sticks! “Our students deserve it. They deserve to be young adults, to get out of the building, to have experiences,” said Mark O’Connor, principal at the Carter School. (Boston Globe)
  • Field trips are not easy to pull off for the Carter School, given the challenges of accessibility in one of the oldest cities in the country, but their philosophy is to keep going. “We want to give them the experience of a variety of opportunities in the community. We also go hiking and kayaking,” said O’Connor. (Boston Globe)
  • Miller Academy applauds the inclusive efforts of the Carter School and community-minded partners like Club Cafe and hope that their spring fling can take place in 2021!
