SISTERHOOD SPOTLIGHTS ILLUMINATE LOCAL GIRLS WHO INSPIRE
By SisterHood Scribe: Gretchen Johnson | Needham Mom
Lauren Johnston, the founder of Sew Easy, with locations in Needham and Naples FL, is our “mindful neighbor” this week, making 100’s of protective face masks and donating them to essential workers from the Greater Boston area to Florida's Southwest coast.
As described in a recent story in the Marco Eagle, Johnston has transformed her Marco Island home into a makeshift, outdoor sewing classroom for the past few months. Young girls from the area have been chipping in to help with production that is “reminiscent of World War II’s Rosie the Riveter. You could call them, collectively, Susie the Seamstress,” the article stated. (Marco Eagle).
Johnston's team of helpers range in age from 9 to 12 and have been all-in from the start. “We had to close our business locations here and in Boston. But kids and their mothers were eager to help, and we figured this was a way that we, and they, could give back,” Johnston shared. The mom of a young seamstress agreed, “It’s a calculated risk worth taking,” she said, while remaining six feet from a reporter. “For people in hospitals saving lives, it’s the least we can do – and it’s nice to get a little social contact.” (Marco Eagle)
Sew Easy’s masks have been donated to local children’s shelters and healthcare centers in Southwest Florida and the Boston/Metrowest area. Johnston has also put together instructions and an online DIY kit for people to make their own masks. But as a small business, she and her fellow employees could use your support: "While our children's sewing schools remain closed during this crisis, we have been busy sewing great quality face masks to help keep our business afloat," Lauren noted in a recent email to her clients.
As long-time fans of Sew Easy’s after-school program (where my daugther Annika has enjoyed learning to sew) NikaVika salutes Lauren and her team as they work hard to keep us safe and healthy! Please consider buying Sew Easy masks for your family by visiting their link here on Etsy.com
P.S. Happy Mother's Day to our Mom Members of NikaVika!
